How does the formula within Scorecard™ actually work?
- The first part of the formula determines the number
of Runners On Base by adding the number of hits, walks, hit-by-pitch
and subtracting caught stealing.
- The second part figures out the Total Bases.
This is the normal method of a single worth 1 base, a double two, etc.
- The third part is called Advancement of Runners.
This adds stolen bases (multiplied by .6) and sacrifices (multiplied by
.6) to the total bases.
- Next the number of Plate Appearances is determined
by simply adding the number of at-bats, walks, and hit-by-pitches. This
must be at least 25.
- Finally, all of these mini-formulas are combined
as follows: On Base is multiplied by Advancement of Runners. That is then
divided by Plate Appearances and the result is your Total Offense.
1 run is subtracted from this amount to complete the formula and provide
a balance with pitching.
- The Total Defense is determined by counting
the number of earned runs given up by all the pitchers and adding in the
number of errors (multiplied by .6) with the number of lineup holes (multiplied
by .6).
- A Raw Score is then determined that simply
adds your TOTAL OFFENSE to your opponent's TOTAL DEFENSE. That number
is then divided by 2.
- The Rounded Score is then determined using
normal rounding techniques, i.e., scores of .50 or greater are rounded
up and .49 or less are rounded down.
- The Final Score is the rounded score unless
a tie-breaker is used (see the Tie-breaker FAQ) or the number of home
runs hit was greater than the rounded score (rare).
